Despite the difficult economic conditions and a surprisingly warm summer it seems that Brits are more eager than ever to get away for the holidays. In 2009, holidays to sunnier climates and beaches are still incredibly popular. But which destinations are the most popular of all this year? According to search results by UK travellers for the year, Spain continues to be the most popular destination for 2009 holidays. Malaga, Tenerife and Alicante are all in the top 5 of the most popular searches.

Another popular search for 2009 holidays wasn't a beach resort at all, but instead a skiing holiday to the incredibly popular destination of Geneva in Switzerland. Geneva makes a great change of pace and offers holiday makers something different at a relatively low cost, especially if you've been before and don't have to pay for any skiing lessons!

Outside of Europe, Turkey and Cyprus remain very popular destinations thanks to their beautiful resorts and their close proximity to the UK. Dalaman in Turkey was 5th on the list for 2009 holidays, showing that people are still willing to travel out some way in order to find the best balance of value for money and holiday experience.

Further afield, 2009 holidays to America are still gaining popularity even though the pound is weak against the dollar making trips to the states more expensive than they once were. New York and Florida remain the most popular search destinations offering some stunning Family holidays, sightseeing and shopping destinations. Flights to America have remained cheap despite rising cost of fuel.

The most popular place for UK travellers this year is London, showing that while overseas travel may be a great option, there are still many people who would rather stay at home and weather out the financial storm before packing their bags and flying out to somewhere more exotic.
